2021 Showreel SD1 Redesign

This was an assignment created for Sound design 1 at Edinburgh Napier and is the full length version of my 2021 showreel.

Project Description:
This project tasked me with creating for 7 aspects in games. Ambience, Weather, Vehicle, Weapons, HUD/Interface, Monster and Robot. Each clip needed to demonstrate at least one of these aspects and required us to work to a one aspect per week schedule in order to keep up in class and have content to receive feedback on.

I used the following games. Final Fantasy XV Royal - Square Enix Persona 5 The Royal - Atlus The Last of Us Part 2 - Naughty Dog Gears of War 5 - The Coalition

Technical Description: *Images to follow*

Final Fantasy XV Royal demonstrates a vehicle and ambience segment. This segment features my family car under continuous load and utilises pitch shifting and automation in order to achieve the sound of a bigger more stately car. The sea sound present is field recordings layered and automated to give the perception of the team slowly arriving at the sea side. It also features a large amount of foley recordings and a guest performance from my friend Lucas who did the VO.

Persona 5 The Royal demonstrates weapon and ambience sound design. The clip in question sees the players team fighting monsters in a spooky castle. Processing was used on the monster and Morgana audio in order to give them a more distorted/corrupted feeling as the enemies in this game are manifestations of distorted desires. Weapon audio was created using layering to produce the knife sound and the lightning magic uses automation to create the build of energy before the character releases their magic.

The Last of Us Part 2 demonstrates a weather scene. This clip sees Ellie about to head out into a storm and features lots of spot effects of building ambience as the building is significantly degraded and would produce a lot of sound in a storm. The sea audio was also painstakingly edited to produce wave crashes at exactly the right moment with elements of sea spray when appropriate. This was my personal favourite area to work on and sparked my personal interest in weather sounds.

Gears of War 5 features a monster, weapon, weather and robot segment. This is the final boss fight of the game as the player struggles to stop the monsters from overrunning the city. The monster is produced from pitch shifted and time stretched VO and its movements are layers of debris created using large amounts of time stretching. The gun play was my least satisfactory element of the redesign, attempting to not use gun samples. The guns were created using samples of a typewriter and augmented using slams of a wooden plank and whip cracks. The robot was created by processing recordings of my laptop fan and automated to create the movement seen on screen. The robot voice was created using classical robot voice synthesis technique of editing together many different sine tones in quick succession.

I am currently reworking the last minute as part of my upcoming 2023 showreel. The Story of E. Rose

This is a game project I worked on for Distilled Productions.  For this project I created audio assets for the game that the game designer could not create themself. These ranged from digital static sounds to notify players of errors to air lock venting sounds.  To achieve these, I recorded sounds and mixed them with EMF recordings and contact microphone recordings to create all the sounds I provided. I then edited these in Reaper to add the post processing the sounds needed to convey the size of the players locations. Play the game: https://distilledproductions.itch.io/the-story-of-e-rose

Train Sim World 5: ScotRail Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street Redesign

This redesign is based upon the ScotRail eXpress: Edinburgh to Glasgow TSW5 DLC created by Rivet Games. With this project I aimed to gain a better understanding of the requirements of train recording. This was to attempt to gain some insight to the methods that are used to simulate the sound of the train in the game.  I went out and recorded two lengths of the route over the course of a day, taking time in each station to search for sounds on the outside of the train only audible when idle or when departing.  These were then edited to fit a pre-created video of gameplay. It was an interesting experience especially when trying to record clean audio on a commuter service! Software Used: Reaper Final Cut  OBS

Navigational Weather System

This project is my honours project, the culmination of my honours project literature research and time at Edinburgh Napier. Project Description: This project aims to alleviate the growing trend of over reliance on UI as the method for conveying information in games.  Inspirited greatly by the implementation of navigation in Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Production, 2020. Ghost of Tsushima game uses sound and animation in order to guide users to locations within the world. This is what I wish to build upon but remove the reliance on UI to guide the player. As while Ghost of Tsushima is not overly cluttered the majority of new open world game releases wish to convey so much information to the player the screen becomes cluttered.  Technical Description: The project is a Unity asset store project that has been integrated with Wwise. The weather system was created and then sound designed using the Wwise Soundseed air, woosh and grain plugins. This project allowed  me to le...
