Lorna Lloyd’s Diary of the War

This project was an podcast series created for the Platform to Platform project as part of the group project module at Edinburgh Napier University.

This project was a collaborative effort between myself, Andras Peter, Michael Suttie, James Eddowes and Alex Gencs.

The project was successfully won via a project bid on the Edinburgh Napier Projex site.

The team worked with Dr Iain McGregor, Dr Bruce Ryan and Professor Hazel Hall to adapt the diary of Lorna Lloyd to a podcast format. The team then split into different roles, myself handling recording with the actors and project management, Andras dealing with project editing, James file management and editing, Michael worked with Dr Ryan to create a website (or see below) for the podcast, while Alex worked on creating sound effects and soundscapes.

Once the project was complete, we created a talk on the project for assessment. This was so well received that the team got to present again for the chance of a prize at the ComputerShare offices to a panel made up of ComputerShare employees. We did not win here but valued the experience.

I had the opportunity to head down to Malvern (Lorna’s Home) to attend the opening ceremony for the podcast. This was a public event in the Great Malvern Priory, where many of the Lloyd family attended.

Train Sim World 5: ScotRail Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street Redesign

This redesign is based upon the ScotRail eXpress: Edinburgh to Glasgow TSW5 DLC created by Rivet Games. With this project I aimed to gain a better understanding of the requirements of train recording. This was to attempt to gain some insight to the methods that are used to simulate the sound of the train in the game.  I went out and recorded two lengths of the route over the course of a day, taking time in each station to search for sounds on the outside of the train only audible when idle or when departing.  These were then edited to fit a pre-created video of gameplay. It was an interesting experience especially when trying to record clean audio on a commuter service! Software Used: Reaper Final Cut  OBS

Navigational Weather System

This project is my honours project, the culmination of my honours project literature research and time at Edinburgh Napier. Project Description: This project aims to alleviate the growing trend of over reliance on UI as the method for conveying information in games.  Inspirited greatly by the implementation of navigation in Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Production, 2020. Ghost of Tsushima game uses sound and animation in order to guide users to locations within the world. This is what I wish to build upon but remove the reliance on UI to guide the player. As while Ghost of Tsushima is not overly cluttered the majority of new open world game releases wish to convey so much information to the player the screen becomes cluttered.  Technical Description: The project is a Unity asset store project that has been integrated with Wwise. The weather system was created and then sound designed using the Wwise Soundseed air, woosh and grain plugins. This project allowed  me to le...

Lost Selves

For this project I again collaborated with Distilled Productions Limited. In this project I dealt with character foley and worldalising created sounds by designing reverbs for the game locations. I also created door creaking and lock sounds.  These elements were created by selecting different footwear to denote different characters and recording these on the surfaces such as pavement and wooden floor. These were then edited in Reaper to help distinguish the characters by adding pitch shifts to some characters.  These elements then all had two reverbs created for them depending on the kind of room the player was in.
